I am finally home and finding the time to share a little about our trip to Australia the end of July. We flew over on the Wednesday prior to the Pope arriving for World Youth Day in Sydney. What a poor decision that was to try and non-rev when the "World" was filling up all the flights. Amazingly we only had a one day set back in LA as we tried to leave on a Tuesday night and didn't get out so we went to the Museum of Tolerance in Santa Monica and then visited Mark in Huntington Beach Wednesday day. We were traveling with our friends, Lewis and Sheila Waddoups who've lived in Melbourne and lucked into getting Business class so we had good meals and almost fully reclining seats for the 13+ hour travel to Sydney and then got breakfast to fill the 1 hour jump to Melbourne. (because of the time zones, we lost one complete day during travel and arrived Friday morning) We stayed with Sheila's brother and were chauffered to the beautiful coast one day, home through a gorgeous rainforest with a side hike to a waterfall through the huge forest of gum trees and ferns. The 3rd day was Sunday and we attended the ward the Waddoups had belonged to which was fun for them to revisit some old friends. Afterwards, Sheila's sister-in-law hosted a big family pot luck dinner and we got to meet all of her sibs and many neices, nephews and cousins. On the 4th day we drove to the Murray River in a town established by their gold rush where we had lunch on a paddle steamer. My one wish was realized that day when we saw two different 'mobs' of wild Kangaroos and were able to stop and snap some pictures. They roam in the open countryside like deer in Utah. Taking the train to the city the 5th day was easy and we really enjoyed seeing as much of it as we could from top to bottom-skyscrapers, shops, Yarra River walk,& Victoria Market for souvenirs. It is a beautiful, modern and clean city. On the 5th day we took the train and bus system completely across town from her brothers suburb to the Melbourne Temple. It was a small one but 'lovely' (a very commonly used adjective to describe everything that is, well, lovely!) Having to transfer in town, we stopped on our way back to enjoy seeing Melbourne harbor and beach where the ship Sheila's family emmigrated on arrived. We walked around the more artsy part of the city where their performing arts centers were and beautiful gardens. Each night upon arriving back at her brothers, we all enjoyed toast and hot chocolate Aussie style-made with milk and lighter, not a heavy cocoa like we make. One evening her sisters family invited us over for a wonderful dinner with roasted leg of Lamb and all the trimmings afterwhich we watched Aussie football-or as they say: footy. No helmets or pads, fast paced & exciting with some kicking and some dribbling of a stubby version of a football. Michael was hooked! The next morning(Thursday) we flew to Sydney, caught the train then a taxi out to the suburb where the Temple was and walking in pouring rain to the patrons apartment ( a former motel bought by the church for temple visitors to use), much farther down the street than Sheila had remembered from a previous visit years ago! They were large kitchette rooms and we had the place to ourselves for the next 2 days while we explored durinig the day and attended the Temple in the evenings, enjoying one night being asked to do sealings. A nice shopping center was across the street so we were able to buy food from food vendors and a grocery store. Friday was our day to sight see in Sydney and it was rainy and overcast all day but we still explored enjoying covered speed ferry rides (included in the price of our train ticket to town) unde the Harbor Bridge next to the famous Opera House through the channels out to Manly Beach, a popular summer surfing destination. Yes there were groups climbing over the Harbor Bridge even in the rain and we were amazed. (Apparently that is a must-do in Sydney that we all decided was a not-do for us but I got good pix). We took a different ferry back to a town close to the Temple area instead of the train which was cool. Sydney reminded me alot of Seattle with the waterways, ferries, hilly landscape and weather. Saturday was depart for home day but apparently tons of the Youth-Day folks stayed an extra week to tour also and the flights were oversold. Since the sun was out in full force we headed back to town, finding a nice outdoor vendor plaza and fun places to eat staying to see the city at night, and the opera house up close. I would've LOVED to have seen the Modern Dance Performance that night after viewing a video clip on an electronic billboard-but the cost and the company I was with prohibited the whole idea. sigh. We arrived back at the airport around 11p deciding earlier to sleep it out there that night. In a designated area by baggage claim, we claimed two divided benches that seated 4 putting one in front of us to prop our legs on and all tried to sleep, surrounded by alot of others, including WYD kids (yup they were still around to our frustration). Trying ended at 5am when we were allowed back into the arrival area and claimed some comfy overstuffed chairs in the Starbucks eating area. Crowds arrived by 7 so we hung until 2:30p when we again weren't about to get on either flight to the states (only 2 a day on United Airlines which was our only choice). By this time we had made friends with 2 other couples, one LDS from Perth and one engaged young couple from Mexico City for the WYD who had been sleeping there for 5 days, were out of money and she was sick with a fever and sore throat. We decided to get a hotel and paid for the young couple to join us. We all took naps, and met for a very nice dinner where Michael tried Kangaroo which was delicious and alot like tender beef. Monday was our lucky day (3rd times the charm) and we got the last two seats in 1st class and all the others got into Business class so we were again fed well, treated well and slept well. We arrived in LA with just enough time to get out bags, get through customs and boogey to the St. George flight arrivng home around 4:30pm tired and confused as to what day it was because we gained a whole day back through the time zones, crazy huh! ( It was still Monday!) I was only hoome 4 days when Michael and I went to his 40th HS reunion in Provo and I flew out the next day to PA to spend the week with Emily for her birthday and play with the twins. After flying back home to SLC Saturday the 9th, I stayed to babysit Jaycee for Brian a couple of days and then came home Monday night with Maira and Anna along so that we could fly to LA the next day to get Anna a passport and Bryce a Brazilian visa for their vacation to Rio the last of August.

I stayed an extra day with Mark, chilling at the beach reading a good book all day and drove to St. George Wedneday night with him as he was coming to the premier of a movie he helped produce here 6 years ago called 'The Fly Boys'. It was a red carpet affair and so fun. Carrie, Dallin and I all got to attend with him, have our pix taken with the actors and feel like celebs. (we all wore shades, hee hee, but hey it was 102 degrees!)

What a fabulous show-the scenery was spectacular, actors well cast and story enthralling from start to finish with shots even from our neighborhood fields! If you get a chance to see it in your towns, DOOOO! He hopes it will get to spread to many cities across the US as it was an independent film that won tons of awards at multiple film festivals recently.
Anyway, from the Beautiful rugged shores of the Melbourne, to New Jersey's Atlantic Point Pleasant with the twins one week to the Pacific white sand in Huntington, I think I am using my hard earned flight benefits quite nicely, don't you?!!! xoxo Sandy
